The YMBTA produces a unique urban hub through the hybridization of two long-standing systems: the YMCA and the MBTA. While the project combines a mix of transit, education and athletic spaces, in terms of scale, the athletic facilities dominate the footprint of the site—

larger than both the transit and community programs combined. This project transforms the running track into the defining feature of the project. Morphed and expanded to fill the entire site, the remaining program is placed inside. The track lanes lose their typical even divisions. Lanes are compressed and expanded, twisted and spread apart. These operations distort the track into spaces that accommodate each of the other non-athletic programs.
